The Whakatipu Active Travel programme sets out a plan for an integrated network of trails to make it safer and easier for locals and visitors to move around the region, connecting to public transport, existing and future growth areas, and key destinations. It builds upon and fills some gaps in the region’s significant trail network, to give locals and visitors choice in how they move about the Whakatipu Basin, and encourage more people to cycle or walk, particularly for commuting purposes.
DallowBoss was engaged to review the suitability of existing trails signage, and subsequently devise a placement and design strategy for implementation on the first four planned routes.
The design utilises existing structural forms for visual consistency and maintenance efficiencies. Subtle formatting and layout changes to graphic panels improve the legibility and functionality of the signage, and ensures comfortable integration of existing and new signage. In future, these new panel designs can be retrofitted to older structures when replacement or updates are required.
Although reasonably insignificant within the magnificent natural surroundings of the Whakatipu Basin, the signage adds to users’ understanding of the route network and surrounding landscape, by providing overview maps at trail heads and key decision making points, along with directional and reminder posts in between.
