Te Kotuku Maternity Unit

Role:

Wayfinding Consultation, Strategy and Design

Client:

Northland District Health Board

DallowBoss delivered the wayfinding component of the new Te Kotuku Maternity Unit at Whangarei Hospital. The $9.8m unit replaces the previous 40-year-old facility and brings all maternity services together under one roof.

The Te Kotuku (White Heron) Unit required effective directional and room identification signage to meet staff and visitor needs. In collaboration with the client, DallowBoss devised an information hierarchy and design that accounts for levels of room importance and use, as well as comprehensive presentation of Te Reo and English languages. To further define the most significant rooms, large-scale photographic wallpaper treatments surround the entries to the five birthing rooms – named after native New Zealand plants.
